A category of hardware and software that allow people to make use of the internet as the main transmission medium for phone calls is known as VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is used to send voice data in packets instead of the normal POTS circuits. The major advantage of VoIP is the non attraction of surcharges on telephone calls over the internet beyond what the caller will pay for internet access, just as no one pays for sending e-mails online. “Voice over IP is another name for VoIP, and it is basically the means of using internet for placing telephone calls. The major reason is cost and convenience because VoIP is cheaper than regular telephone services and its high speed internet can serve several phone lines. The advantages of VoIP are: Freedom to make cheap calls: It is doubtful if anyone would not jump at the opportunity of making phone calls at reduced rate. The services offered by service providers varies, some offer free long distance calls, while others charge a token. You will receive added features at no cost: Normally, you get for free with VoiP services most features that are offered for a fee elsewhere. These features include Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Call Transfer, etc and they are all free with VoIP. Business features like email and web utilities can also be obtained free of charge. You can also choose your Area code: VoIP allows you to select your own phone number and area codes. What this means is this: in maintaining an existing number, you can either opt to choose a new number based on the area code or transfer the old one into a new VoIP service.
